South Cambie Real Estate – Homes and Condos For Sale

South Cambie is one of Vancouver’s smallest neighborhoods. Shaped like a long, thing rectangle with an inward bulge at one end, the area sits between affluent Shaughnessy on the western end and Queen Elizabeth Park on the east. Little Mountain is the cause of the bulge. Cambie Street arches around the park and the Bloedel Floral Conservatory. Oak Street is the western edge, the northern border is West 16th Avenue, and to the south is West 41st Avenue.

Part of a circa 1800 Canadian Pacific Railway land grant, this thin strip of land was named for one of the company’s engineers, Henry Cambie. Other than a road built by loggers to the top of Little Mountain, a Chinese vegetable garden on top of that mountain and a few small houses, the area remained much in its natural state until the 1940s.

Some of the oldest homes may be found on the northern end, including the current home of a training facility for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police which was built in 1912 in the Tudor style. South Cambie is also known for its concentration of medical facilities, including BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals and Shaughnessy Hospital. Schools in the area include the Edith Cavell Elementary, Emily Carr Elementary and Eric Hamber Secondary. Two French-immersion schools are also available.
