Marpole Real Estate – Homes and Condos For Sale
Marpole began as a commercial area filled with sawmills, gravel companies and shingle factories. It was also a stop on the British Columbia Electric Railway. The area was once called Eburne Station but in 1916 the name was changed to honor Richard Marpole, a General Superintendant serving with the Canadian Pacific Railway. When Marpole amalgamated with Vancouver in 1929 it was a bustling industrial zone.
After the building of the Oak Street and Arthur Laing Bridges, business tended to migrate west. There are still a variety of stores, particularly along Granville Street’s southern end. Quaint corner shops, reminiscent of an earlier age, are found along Cambie and Oak Streets. The eastern end of Marpole is slated for further development, including residential towers, office towers and assorted commercial and retail spaces. One project, the Marine Gateway, has already been approved.
Six elementary schools serve Marpole, including McKechnie Elementary, Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary, David Lloyd George Elementary and J.W. Sexsmith Elementary. The Catholic St. Anthony of Padua is also available. Secondary schools are just outside the borders. Winona Park is a large urban green space with three levels. Aside from a children’s playground, the park is pretty much in its natural state and offers stunning ocean views.
